During 2002 I took part in a project called 12xme, where the participants took one selfportrait a month. This was my portrait for April and one of my favourites from the whole series. The boys in the picture are my two oldest sons, aged 6 and 2 at the time.
I wonder if my appreciation of this is mostly based on sentimental value, or do you see other qualities in it?
No, this photo is very strong in its own right. The motion blurring, the repetition of open mouths with teeth and tongues, the child's hand on the right an echo of the parental hand on the left-- all give this photo great visual interest. The composition made by the heads has a nice classic shape to it, yet the motion and the teeth give a distinctly aggresssive edge. An unusual and compelling peice of portraiture.
One small complaint, I do wish the dark tones got closer to true black. This print looks a bit washed out.
Keeping kids still for a photo, been there! This captures the dynamics really well, great sense of movement with just the right amount of motion blurr.
I don't think your sentiment enters into it at all, it's a very fine photograph, conjures up a great mood and time of life. I agree with Jonathon's comments about the blacks, you might try printing at a little higher contrast.
Your sentiment aside-I see two boys, happy as can be, with their father. This is something that I can relate to--my kids smiles can make the worst of days turn around. I think its wonderful.
On a side note my 4 yr old daighter just stumbled into the room and the first thing she did was look at the picture and giggle. Not that your target audience was my 4 yr old--but even she can figure that it is a scene full of laughter and fun. Nice work. Could you add a touch more exposure-- maybe burn in your hand a little to bring it in line with the rest of the print--it might just be the scan. From a technical standpoint thats all I would add..
