Scottish Independence Referendum

On Sept 18th 2014, adults in Scotland were asked the following question in a Referendum:

“Should Scotland be an independent country, Yes or No?”

This photo is from a larger series of photographs made in the weeks leading up to the vote in and around Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. I’ve tried to document a flavour of this historic moment, frozen in time.

For the portraits I set up in the city centre and photographed people telling me how they intended to vote on polling day: thumbs up for ‘Yes’, thumbs down for ‘No’ and a mixture for people who were unsure. There was nothing scientific about my approach, more ‘Yes’ than ‘No’ voters volunteered for photographs. Much hilarity was involved, and I had many good conversations from across the political spectrum. The craic was good.

In the end, the Referendum result was a victory for ‘No’, 55% to 45%. Voter turnout was a very high 85%.

I think I prefer the no vote.

Back in the early '90's,when living in London,it was very common to come across Scottish people bemoaning the fact that they had to live under the "English Yoke".At that time they didn't have any say in the matter-The outcome of the election surprised me,I suppose 45%,or so,of them still have a complaint to voice.I'm a fan of your photos,by the way!

I had to look up the word "Craic." (The craic was good.) A new word for my California vocabulary.

From across the pond, her poster shows a very confusing message. Is she saying that she is against independence because Scotland would just end up in the EU? Well, they're already in the EU as part of the UK. Huh?

This lady was a real character, a true eccentric. She told me she travelled the length and breadth of the UK with different message boards on a whole range of topics... Was not really very clear what she meant either. In the event of a 'Yes' vote Scotland had planned to apply to join the EU, but preferred to use the Pound rather than apply to join the Euro currency. One thing was certain, she had a right-wing anti-European message (even if it was a bit muddled), much more in keeping with the politics of south-east England than with the traditionally more left-wing flavour of Scottish politics.
