Schwanenstein

Schwanenstein

The large stone in the background is called Schwanenstein (swan stone). It's the largest of several large glacial leftovers lying around the shore of the island Rügen. In the far distance on the horizon you can see Kap Arcona.
There's a sad story around the Schwanenstein. One winter in the early 50's some boys where playing on the icepack when a gale came up. They flew onto the stone. Local people and the firebrigade could not rescue them from there. They called army pioneers from the garrison of Binz but even they weren't able to fetch them form the stone. The boys died that night. It's hard to imagine, the stone is only about twenty yards from the shore and the water is shallow.
I see lots of great pictures in the gallery. I wonder how others manage to keep the brilliance. In my scans it's always lost.
