One room school house teacher's desk had both the large recess bell, and the indoor quiet bell along with a stack of slates. Shot with a small amount of diffusion with an Rodenstock Imagon lens.

I take it that the kids are outside playing and the teacher has all the slates on the desk ready for marking the kids' work.

My mother taught one-room country schools in the 1930s and '40's. All 8 grades in one room with one teacher. When she retired from teaching highschool in 1980, they gave her the bell she had used in her first school. It was one of her most prizes possessions, displayed prominently in her home.
