Scenic Ave Rocks & Water

Scenic Ave Rocks & Water

Flatbed scan of 8 x 10 sulphide (heavily) / selenium toned silver print.

I'm kind of 'on the fence' about continuing to print this image or enlarge to 11 x 14. I like the water and the rocks and the way my eyes move around it, but there is no one single subject to focus on.. thoughts appreciated.

You do have an S curve in the tones of the water for the eyes to follow. Put it on the wall and live with it for a while, maybe something will resonate and you will see where to go with it.

I like the image! It's Wynn Bullock-y(in a good way). Just a thought about the information in the rocks. I think that the details in the rocks are not uniform; what I mean is that I feel like either more detail should be brought out, or, more of the rocks should be burned out. I don't know if this makes sense or not. I also don't know what information is in the neg. Overall, though, I like this image.

I like the image too and agree that there is no real point of interest, perhaps bringing out more detail in the rocks will be a significant improvement.

A beautiful photograph as it is. Well exposed and printed. I have really enjoyed simply sitting and looking at it. Charlie...............

I think this image has a life of its own. I would be proud to have made it, and if I had it would be on my wall. Beautiful work. I don't agree that it needs a center of interest. It is a whole unto itself just as it is.

Technically speaking, my calibrated monitor shows detail just about everywhere. I see no improvement to be made. Personally, my taste is for cooler images with a bit more contrast to them, but that's my taste. This is your image. If warm is your preference, I can't argue.

I agree with gilbeas' statement above. Put it on the wall and live with it. It may suggest where you want to take the image. Or it may just live there as it is for a looong time!

To me, the subject is the water - its luminosity and its movement. The rocks frame the main subject, and help give form to what might otherwise appear formless. It's a real treat for these eyes....

I would have given the water about a 20sec exposure giving it a foggy look and that would bring out the rocks even more. I like the cropping and the tones I'm getting on the monitor, which are slightly on the dark side. The foggy water would set the mood.

Vic, I do not think you need one particular subject to focus on in the image. The photograph as a WHOLE is what the viewer should be seeing, not just a small part of it. With that in mind, the image has a nice quality that lets the viewers eye really explore the whole image. Very fine image.
