I had seen this artist painting as we wandered through the courthouse. Eventually I walked past her and it hit me. the light was fantastic. In these 2 shots I tried, but failed miserably, to capture her, her work, and the subject. I should have had the temerity to get closer, but did not want to be a bother. Comments, especially on the composition, desired.
In this one, I got closer, focused on her and opened wide to throw the background out of focus.
The one thing that occurs to me is that the subject is over on the RHS of your picture and is apparently looking out of the photograph as if the object she is painting is out there. This is not a good idea from a compositional point of view. There should be a larger area to the right of the artist and less on the LHS.The strong lighting on the building on the LHS is a distraction for the viewer from the artist and her task. This of course is just my opinion.
Vincent, thank you for your comment and I agree with you. Throwing it out of focus was intended to ease the distraction and what is in the picture is pretty much exactly what is in the painting. I was hoping to get away with breaking the rules, but knew I failed as soon as I saw the first scan. The other picture shows where she piled her gear, that is probably where the shots should have been taken from. She would have been facing into the picture.
