I read recently that Sandburg's wife was a breeder of champion dairy goats. Apparently this interest in and talent for genetics was a family trait as her brother was a renowned breeder of flowers, developing several new varieties of poppies as well as many new types of delphiniums. Her brother was Edward Steichen.
