Russian Boy and Rabbit

Russian Boy and Rabbit

Hi,I've learnt a lot and hugely enjoyed searching the forum - now its time to jump in.. I'm looking for critique of this picture and my lith skills, looking to develop a portfolio!! Any critique / suggestions welcome and hoped for!

The picture was taken in 2005 in St Petersburg, on the bridge to the Peter and Paul Fortress. The boy is diving for the change that tourists have thrown at the rabbit. One second later he smiled and waved at me..

Contrary to what patrick says - I feel that there's usually MORE to critique with a successful than an unsuccessful image. Well - the more 'content' the more to critique! But anyway - What really works in this image - is it's simplicity - great for that! The second set of piles making up the pier column reinforce what we see in the middle of the picture - and strongly anchor the picture structurally! I think it wouldn't work quite as well were it not for that column. It adds JUST ENOUGH complexity for it to function visually. Certainly it carries the eye across and through the frame and onto the subject.

I think that - LIKE the issue with the 'posts' that the scene is JUST reconizable enough yet JUST surreal enough to set up tension - both thematically and structurally (as I mentioned) to keep the image a strong one. I think that using the lith dev really figures into this by creating a deep, murky, watery tone that has an atmosphere of mystery. I would REALLY like to see this as a standard silver print. I wonder if the image would fall flat or not. So - what I'm saying - is that I think the lith dev was a really good choice and it PROBABLY amplified what is strong about the image.

Okay - I'm taking too much space here - but I'd love to hear what you think about these ideas. Thanks.

I agree Jonathan, I just didn't want to take all day writing something, and there are no other images of his to compare it to, hence the brief response that it is a fine image all by itself, which it is.

My only suggestion is to make more like this one!

Patrick
