round key #1

round key #1

ok, listening to the sugestions of several who asked for a crop, here it is. I am not so sure I like it. Although I agree it would have been better if the partial tree on the right of the scene was not in the original it would have been a better image, for me somthing gets lost moving the tree into the extreme right side of the image. I hate croping when using extreme wide angle, it kind of defeats the purpose. I also burned in some of the light color froth in the water. Let me know what you think. Thanks, jb

You may want to look into split-grade filtering and/or contrast masking to get your tonal ranges more under control- the dodging of the tree area is distractingly obvious. You may also want to stop the lens down a couple stops to extend your print time out enough that you can manage the dodge of the tree in several smaller steps so you can do it in smaller, more controlled steps so the margin around the tree is tighter to the tree.

That said, it is a really neat image, and I'd like to see it when it more closely matches your vision for it. You've got a really challenging image to work on, and I give you a big plus for even trying to tackle that.

Thanks Sam and flying camera.
Flying camera, the strange look of the tree is the result of the sun hitting the tree and the water beyond it. I think thats what is giving it the bizare dodged look. That however is what the image is all about. When the sun went out seconds later, the tree got lost in the dark clouds beynd it and the sand that you see glowing in the current went out and was no longer visible too. I was lucky to click off the shot while I still had the light but wished I would have cropped better in camera. I actualy had to try to tone the tree down some. I guess Mother Nature did the dodging

Very photogenic area (Ten Thousand Islands). The image is very good; however the left side is somewhat distracting (even though very attractive). You might consider cropping the left & upper portion. But well seen!!

This is quite a striking image and thanks for posting.
It also gave me the opportunty to view you other work and it is impressive.
One thing I note though is that all images you have presented here have been neg scans or transparancies. Some having had extensive PS work.
Do you make prints from these? Are you able to realise your vision in silver print form? I have no doubt that some images would be even more striking using the controls available in the darkroom on paper. As you are using large format I think that some wonderful prints can be made here.
Regards,
John
Do you

John, your work is stunning. I have some questions on your use of your wide angle lens that I'll send you sometime. I know how you feel about cropping. It's tough to give up part of the original composition, and I often prefer to see a little extra. Cropping does help in this case.
