a very interesting subject, but my eye wants to see more detail. The image looks a bit soft overall. Is this just a product of the scanning, or does this represent the look of the final print?

the original print is sharper. all the prints I scan and submit, seem to have this softness. I am new to scanning photos and don't completely understand the scanning process.

Try using the un-sharp mask tool in Photoshop.
