Ribbon

Ribbon

I work mostly in the Fetish genre. This image was taken with a Bronica ETRS and was actually the last one of the shoot. I asked the model if she had any particular image she wanted herself and she suggested the ribbon (which was originally blue) and we set it up and shot it in color and black and white. I then scanned the negs into my computer and I much preferred the black and white version but wanted to retain color in the image. I substituted the blue for purple.

Its a nice image, but don't tell me you used Photoshop to add the color? That's a big no-no here in APUG and you will hear it from others. And I was hoping to learn how you got that nice purple color by hand...

Actually, I should have added that I scanned the neg in AFTER it was hand tinted with Patterson color inks. I had to add several layers to achieve the final color that you see. I had to wait for the inks to dry before layering more on. This print took me ages to do, because I had to print it at 5 x 7 to practice on. I finally printed it on ilford 12 x 16 size.

I do use photoshop for a lot of my images. However, I am aware that this site is for traditionalists so I posted a picture of mine that was traditional rather than electronically created. That said, I am not an advocate of tradtional or digital, I am a photographer and I record the 'Image' whatever tool I use to capture it is incidental to me.

So did you scan the neg or the print? You said that you scanned the neg twice, therefore you must have changed the color in photoshop.

Be sure to read the APUG home page.

Good grief! Which part of "Ilford" "multigrade" and "print" are we having problems with here guys? A typo led to "print" coming out as "neg" - shoot the guy for crimes against typography (as long as we can do the same to you the next time you make a typo)... Welcome to APUG 007.... not everyone's got a hair-trigger response to the d-word  Cheers, Bob.

As Bob F has observed, I did indeed mistype neg for print. david b your 'assumption' that I used photoshop with this image is incorrect. I am aware what APUG is about and of course I have read the homepage. I have stated here that I DID NOT use photoshop with this image, but rather I used patterson photo inks to color the ribbon as stated in a previous post of mine on the subject. McPhotoX you are also incorrect with your 'guess' I actually own my own enlarger with several neg holders for both 35mm and 120 negs. I simply, took a rough file and filed at the inner edge of the neg holder to get a rough edge and then took some emery cloth to the flat plane at the top to smooth it so it wouldnt scratch any of the negative as it lay there.

I am a graduate of an Art College where I studied photography. I was shown the technique by one of my tutors (the one who did the darkroom element of it all) and I embraced it with a view to giving my work a distinctive 'signature' For you to suggest it was done in photoshop is frankly, insulting.

I placed this image in this gallery, I did not place it in the critique gallery. If you wish to lambast and pour scorn on my work, then do so with facts, not guesses (incorrect at that)

Thanks for the welcome to APUG Bob F!

I really like both of your photos on this site. It's unfortunate that the analog police are just waiting to jump all over site members who obviously understand the rules.

This is a beautiful work of art. Thanks for posting and sharing the technique. I was also attacked when I started posting my photos here. I deleted those photos right away as I had it with the photoshop labeling. So, I know how it feels.

The purple is GREAT. Of the two images this is the best. The splash of color totally sets it apart.
