I think the benefit of this method over a straight photograph is the internal structure. Without using a back light (and probably flare), this is more revealing. Toning worked well too.
Nice. I've done a lot of this sort of thing with macro lens on both film and digital cameras with leaves on lightbox...very sharp detail fwiw and no problem with flare, though that probably has to do with lens quality.
