I was very reluctant to take a photo of him. This feels so forced to me that I have never shown it to anyone in 20 years. He already had heart trouble at the time of this photo.
unspeakably desolate image and so much feeling in your description..i find to be a metaphor for his passing the way he's almost out of viewing range. kat~
Kathleen, we are very priveleged that Helen has posted this wonderful image.
It's very obvious that Ray made a profound impression on you Helen, as I've said elsewhere I wish I'd first seen his work much earlier in my life. It gave me a freedom in my photography that I'd lacked until then.
Thanks for posting this Helen. The first workshop that I ever attended was at he Photographers Place and was lead by Ray Moore and Paul Hill and had a significant effect on my photography and my future and both Ray and Paul became good friends who guided me through many troubled times in my photographic journey.
This image captures the quiet, almost elusive Ray, and could have been made by him. I'm not accusing you of copying, more like just paying homage to the greatest photographer and teacher ever produced by the UK.
I love the desolation of the place, that part of the North West was like that, and I cannot help but wonder what Ray had seen to have him quietly exploring the other side of the shelter. I'm pleased that you overcame the reluctance to make the exposure.
I believe that by the time I met him he had stopped doing workshops at the Photographer's Place because of his health. Might be wrong though. Paul Hill has been very helpful to me as well. I guess that thousands of other photographers would say the same.
