I'm forever looking up museums within driving distance. Come July the big show w/ steam powered everything and a machine shop w/ orig. belt-driven metal working gear is the place to be. 'Seems we both zero in on a detail shot. I really like 'em.
@HiHoSilver Because everything is so cluttered usually hard to get a whole shot. I have a photo of the boat and motor bike to, but really hard to compose well.
Oh and yes I love old museums in little country towns as the displays are usually in buildings of the same age as the stuff in them and you can get up close and personal, specially like looking at the old photos.
I'm often driven to the detail shot, lacking confidence in my eye for composing a whole subject. I wind up happy w/ the detail shot, but it doesn't do much for composing w/ the whole subject. The 100 y.o. airplanes in a museum hanger - surrounded by distractions and difficult light - the detail looks great, the whole always looks underwhelming to me. Your detail work is very satisfying.
