Railing and Stairs

I finally mixed up some Crowley's FX-2 as originally published without any substitutions. I just happened to have APX-25 in camera that week.

Ditto on the hand shadow! Good work.

I hope you took several variations on this shot. As it is, it is intriguing until the viewer solves the subject matter then it becomes clever. To have a shot where only the shadow and steps appear I feel would keep it in the abstract and intriguing zones.

Well the shot required the hand else there would be no shot. To achieve the angle I wanted I had to hold on to the rail; and that's what a rail is for which is more to my point. I have no idea how another person would see a shot like this. When I made this I knew I was on a staircase taking a picture of a nice shadow pattern on concrete in Brooklyn on Sunday. As you suggest anyone else would need to make this interpretation and if they came to similar conclusions or are able to know what I knew at the time then it is a poor abstract I agree. In placing an interpretation on an image like this the viewer must start where I started or where you left off in resolving the subject matter. That's where to begin.

This is one of those photos that sums up photography for me: vision.

I failed to make my point clearly. The image would be more abstract (at least to my eyes) if the railings were not visible in the top right hand corner. To achieve this would require you to take photo's from different viewpoints or change the lens. Only you can know this and that is why I enquired if you had taken several shots of the subject. I agree that the hand shadow is essential to the composition and at this point I should make clear that I really like your shot. But I would prefer to see it without the actual railings themselves appearing in the picture.
