two violins on my workbench.
I have posted this image before but have made some changes that I think make it stronger.
I will see from the cooments if it is so...
I love the composition and the simplicity of it. My only critique is that the focus point seems to be on the far violin and it may look better the other way around. Either both in complete focus or a DOF play with the back slightly out may look very interesting. Film wise, I see this with FP4 in Rodinal or Pyro to really bring out the beautiful tonalities and veneer of the maple (looks like maple). Certainly has the potential to make a beautiful print.
Thank you for good, valuable feedback. I use and love Rodinal. I think I have only shot one roll of FP4. One other thought I had was if I had three violins rather than two???
I love the grain (wood and film), the lines and the highlights, but I must admit that I prefer your earlier treatment. To me the big back area is just too intense and drags my eye away from the beautiful woodwork. In the earlier one you had slightly less black space which feels more in balance to me. The tendency to read a print from right to left exacerbates this I think. Of course, the black of your print may be less intense than the black on my monitor so what I've just said may be meaningless.
Why do you ask if three would be better than two? Admittedly odd numbers seem to have more rhythm than even numbers (to me anyway), but you won't really know unless you try it. Perhaps three will be better, perhaps five; or one. What if you filled the frame with these so there was no background? You've got some great subject matter here so why not experiment a bit?
Good eye Daniel...these violin at the time had not been varnished. The tops and necks had not been complete either so the photo is of just the back and ribs.
