WOW......

I used that famous warm tone developer Dektol! Really, I did this and the waterfall shot as a test for the new film I use to mask. I keep the RC around for proofing. Ilfords warmtone papers are just wonderful in my opinion, they really remind me of Pt/Pd prints (with a little more contrast).

Robert-care to divulge the location of this great place?
Thanks,Peter

Robert, this is nice, I really like the balance in the print.

I have seen posts that say a "contrast mask" was used, but I admit I'm not sure what it means and the underlying premise of the process. Perhaps if I knew what to compare it with such as split printing; in what way is it different from that? Is there a web site with some info about the process.

Appreciate any info, thanks.

man just deautiful! This is a one to hang on the walls!

Beautiful Rob just stunning!

What is a contrast mask?

Great question Chuck,

A contrast mask is a piece of film that was exposed by contacting the original neg. Then developed as a positive, albiet thin, and placed back in registration with the original. This lowers the contrast curve for the image.

One may then expose a print with the sandwiched neg/mask under a much higher contrast filter (for vc paper) in this case, under a #5 filter, rendering a much higher "local" contrast for the image overall.

There are some great resources on the web, one of my favorite is: http://www.maskingkits.com/ one if these days I will buy one of these to see what his method is.

I taught myself how to do it from an article by Bruce Barnbaum in Photo Techniques.

Catch me later if you have more questions.

Regards,

This photograph is nice as a scanned image but I'd bet the original is 10 times the image. It is sad knowing there are such great images out there that I'll never get to actually see with my own two eyebones. Just this low res approximation. I'm sure Mr. Hall would'nt be willing to sell a print for what I can afford. All my disposable income is going into buying a good lens, a table saw, more clamps, wood glue, some nice wood, brass hardware and a printed diagram of an 8x10 kit.
