Portsmouth #5

Two tugs going out to meet a Type 45 Destroyer. Taken from a boat that was moving quite fast which made this quite tricky. Also this was almost into the sun.

Most of the time most of us see large ships from above. We are on land, they are in water, and thus we are always looking downward. This one stands out because of the water level point of view. We see the ships as they see themselves. From within their own native environment. Where their waterlines and the horizon line almost merge, and most of the ships are seen majestically outlined against the sky. A more correct perspective, I think. And I can feel that subtle difference here.

Yes I travel to work each morning by PAS (port auxiliary service) boat from one navy base to another which does give a different perspective. Portsmouth is separated from Gosport by a channel of water that forms the entrance/exit to Portsmouth harbour. Although it is only perhaps 200 yards across at the narrowest point (maybe less) there is no bridge so it is 17 miles to drive around.

Although the perspective is interesting it is challenging. There is a lot of reflected light from the water and a lot of sky too which makes metering difficult. Also both the camera and the subject are moving. This Zeiss camera is nearly 60 years old so it does have some limitations and the fastest shutter speed is 1/500s. I was only using ISO 125 film which is too slow; not only were the shutter speeds too slow but the aperture was too wide for the old Tessar to give its best. I think it will take a long time for me to learn how to master these subjects but I will not lack the opportunity to keep trying.

Your raise a good point, Ken. I just liked the view, but didn't put it together w/ the perspective.
I never did get any shots of the Seattle ferries from Kayak level. Maybe Sly has, but I didn't see them in her gallery.
Its nice, Svenedin. I like this one. Seeing more would be quite welcome.

HiHo. Portsmouth #6 is also taken from the water. I may post a couple more today. I have some pictures of warships (not anything sensitive of course) but battleship grey is a bit dull!
