Pops Revisited

I have produced many different bromoil prints of New Orleans' street dancer, Pops. This is one of the first and is on Luminos Charcoal paper (R.I.P.).

Gene Laughter,
Well, this writer considers himself a "purist" who dislikes any photographic approach other than "straight" printing. That having been said; this portrait, plus the other bromoil prints you have posted are exceptionally good; they show such a strong sense of photographic vision I like them despite my prejudices about such types of technique. Please, keep showing us the good work.

John, even though it seems we are at opposite extremes of photographic approaches, I appreciate your kind comments. I cut my teeth in photography loving the work of the likes of Wm. Mortensen, Dr. Max Thorak, Man Ray, Drtikol, Duane Michals, Moholy-Nagy, Breitenbach and others who were far from being "purists." There is room in the world of photographic art for many differing approaches and, in my view, none are right and none are wrong, but the approach taken merely reflects the vision and philosophy of the artist. I have stated in the past that I consider producing bromoil prints to be a marriage of photography, printmaking and painting. My goal is to utilize these elements to the best of my ability in order to produce prints that make this "marriage" a happy one!

Cheers,

Gene

Gene,
I think there is no one in the photographic world that does this better than you. I hope private collectors and alike buy your work.

Pops is getting to be an old friend. Have enjoyed several of your prints of him as well as the other bromoils you have shared with us. Keep it up.
Regards, Jim
