I too like this a lot. I wonder if you know the brightness illumination range? The number of f-stops between the dark shadows and the high spot on the knee? Whatever it is you handled it very well.
thanks, y'all, for your comments. i took a look at the negative to see what was recorded by the camera and can explain how i developed the roll, but i don't think i did anything particularly special with this image, and the scan is a straight scan with no adjustments in any image software (i'm a strict adherent to apug's rules in that sense), though of course i viewed it, straightened it a bit, and cropped it a bit in ps (i've not posted it yet to my flickr account, so i can't provide a link to a higher resolution image). the neg says it was shot at f2.8@1/45 with an EI of -1. the roll was developed in microfine, stock (about 21 degrees), along with another roll in a stainless LPL tank with two rotations at one minute intervals at 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30. then one rotation at one minute intervals at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, and finally one rotation at 10:30 and 12:30, then poured out just before 14:00. as for metering, i just used in-camera, center-weighted metering as i almost always do.
