Platte River Mermaid

Platte River Mermaid

This was taken at about 2 in the morning a few weeks ago. The exposure was very long, and I used a flash to light the swimmer as she went by.

It was actually not a staged event. (Well, it was kind of staged) We were out shooting and these young folks came up and asked what we were doing. After explaining the concept of night photography I asked what they were up to. They said they were going swimming. I asked if I could take photos and they said fine "as long as I don't mind that they will be naked." Like that has ever stopped a photographer. I got out my flash and did two shots, one where she was going feet first down the rapids and looked like she was drowning, and this one.

I like it with bridge and lights cropped out. All in all a very well executed night shot. These are not easy to do.

I like this! It took me a while to see her! (I was wondering what the heck a mermaid had to do with anything!)

I think wfe has a good idea... you could make two prints...one with the bridge (I like the bridge & the lights), and one without to really bring the focus on the 'mer-girl'.

This is such a cool photograph! The swimmer looks almost surreal.
