Pinhole - Avila Beach

Taken last week in Avila Beach, California with my 4x5 pinhole camera. I think I'm getting better at this pinhole craft. My favorite is the underside of the pier shot, next is the promenade shot and last is the topside of the pier shot. I am finding it somewhat difficult to frame the shots due to lack of viewfinder. For instance, the tripod shows on the promenade shot, but not intended. Its a super wide camera, 50mm focal point. Also, the underside of the pier shot was actually aimed quite a bit angled towards the underside of the pier but the way the wide angle coverage goes you get enough sea to the right side that makes it look like it was kind of aimed in that direction. In any case I think these are coming out better than my last set of pinhole shots. And I think in part due to using my new BTZS tubes I just bought in the last few weeks. The tubes are awesome. Oh, lastly these are 8x10 enlargements on my new 4x5 enlarger I picked up yesterday. Critiques not only welcomed but encouraged. I'm trying to increase my skill and have very thick skin during this process.

Quite a funny picture! First a little bit hard to see what's going on, then a nice feeling of circus, jazz, Walt Disney world or...don't really know, but nice to look at. Thanks!

Funny peculiar or funny ha-ha? One of my first employers use to say that anytime someone said funny to mean peculiar. It always derailed me when he said that. Anyhoo.. Yes, I see what you're saying. If I didn't know what this was it would fool me too but this is a familiar site to me. There is sometimes a jazz band actually on this promenade but not that day. All the tourists are back at home now that the season is finally over. It is like a ghost tourist town now. Long pants and long sleeves on the beach even. These steps you see descend to the sandy beach. The street level is a regular sized street in America, but completely closed off to car traffic. There are all kinds of restaurants and shops.. the typical touristy kind of setup. And then the hills behind are all homes dotting the landscape. Very picturesque. At times the street part is an artist's fair, at times it's a Jazz festival. If you're ever going to Central California, its definately worth a stop as it's a super idyllic place to visit.

So, the fuzzy distance seems to be a theme with this camera. I am wondering how the heck do other people get such sharp pictures in the distance and the foreground. I mean, there's no adjustments to this camera except how long you leave your finger off the hole. When I first got it, a shard of brass from the drilling of the hole was blocking one side of the image and caused heavy vignetting. Now that I've cleared that, it seems that it just doesn't get sharp as a tack. But I've seen plenty of pinhole images that are that way. The foreground on the other hand is very sharp. I mean you can see the grain in the wood on the railing which was like only what.. 3 or 4 inches away at the most. I had the camera like right up against the rail, hoping actually that I would clear it and you could see the sand below the pier I was standing on. Well I guess this camera is good for extreme closeups basically and nothing much else unless fuzzy is the theme. I will see about using it that way next time.
