Pepper The Cat (test of OM Zuiko 50mm f1.4)

I was out with my camera running a test roll having just replaced the light seals. This is a shopkeepers cat, indoors, natural light. I wanted to see what the depth of field is like with a recently acquired Zuiko 50mm f1.4 (I've only ever had the f1.8). Tricky to focus indoors with a moving target.

Looks pretty good. I can easily distinguish the black pupils from the background cornea despite the inset nature of cats' eyes and count the whiskers. The DoF looks to be right for a cat portrait. One for the shopkeeper's wall I'd say

That's very kind of you. Yes, since the shopkeeper is a picture framer I am going to send him a print! The cat does look a bit irritated. I don't think he was impressed that I stopped stroking him to take the picture. He would only stay still for one shot and then jumped on the floor to try to get some more attention from me. I didn't have time to preview the DoF. I have previously messed up pictures of dogs by focussing on the eyes and then having the nose out of focus. I was pleased that the camera is light tight again, thanks to an excellent kit from Jon Goodman. The last film of QE aircraft carrier was totally trashed by a light leak. I carried on experimenting with DoF with the rest of the roll taking pictures of Canada Geese trying to get one in a group in sharp focus (have not had a chance to see if that worked). I also found an interesting carved wooden door to play with DoF and that had the advantage that it didn't move.

A proper cat always looks a bit irritated.

You captured the cat so perfectly. There's such wisdom in his/her expression. Your exposure and darkroom work are excellent.

Cats are my weakness: this one looks old ... and wiser than first appears. He knows. At first, he looks bored. Then you focus upon how intensely he is starring directly at you. He knows. - David Lyga

The shopkeeper was pleased with his print. Pepper will continue to greet customers long after he has gone.
