Pashendale?

I came across this misty scene when we set out on a 12 mile hike. The forestry had been recently felled and the hillside made for a ragged mix of stumps, fallen trees and the odd survivor left standing, apparently at random. I took a quick shot as the family was moving on but I was lucky enough that when we returned several hours later it was still misty and I had the chance to spend a little more time composing my image. The fallen tree in the foreground looked like razor wire on a battle field and the overall destruction gave a feeling of being caught up in world war one.

Very powerful, moving and somber, and most importanly, to me anyway, is that it does not feel dated. It feels very much of today and our impending "battle" with nature.

Exceptional image. The mood of the photograph combined with the title makes this ver evocative. Great work!

Tom, thanks for your comments. Yes, there is actually more detail in the original than can be seen here. I have trouble getting scans to show the apparent contrast of the original whilst maintaining shadow detail. In the original you can clearly make out the details on the fallen trunk which runs across the bottom of the frame.

That's a wonderful print. I agree with your sentiments re: razor wire-very much so.

1. Deep mood inside ...
2. I think more about old legends than WWI
3. Excellent work !
