Apart from the difference given by using different focal lengths, and slightly different positioning, it is easy to see why panchromatic film swept the photographic world.
I learnt photography from my grandfather in the 1950's and he used orthochromatic film which we developed under a ruby red covered light globe in the bathroom. When he eventually paid a bit more money for panchromatic film, the difference was quite amazing, especially of family portraits. I don't think he went back to orthochromatic film.
True about position and focal lengths, it was not a well planned comparison. Do you think today's Ilford orthochromatic film is much different from what was used in the 50's?
