Photograph taken this past June at Photostock 2008.
O'Neal Lake is one of the favorite spots around Bill Schwab's place in northern Michigan. There are areas around the lake that are a glorious mess and each revisit reveals a reordering of that chaos.
Is this a multible exposure ? At first it looked like organized confusion and it seemed to work. Closer inspection reveals things not adding up. Now its intriguing, confusing and still kinda working.
O'Neill Lake is indeed unique and different. I think you describe perfectly, with this photograph, what a mess is present there. Dead cedar trees everywhere, lily pads, reflections. It's a beautiful place!
You managed to sort it out again, Daniel. It's special to see how you, with your talent, takes a scene like this and makes a composition like this. It's very fine work in my opinion, Daniel.

This is a single exposure. The apparent confusion captures my sense of the place. I think you could use almost all the english prepositions to describe the layers of tangles, and even in person it's hard to discriminate what is a reflection, submerged, in front of, or above... That's part of what makes this spot so appealing to me.
Rick, it's not that I don't like Friedlander, I'm just woefully ignorant of his work. I'll have to make an effort to look for it.
I love his work! The Art Institute in Minneapolis has a huge exhibit of his work currently. (tickets required) If anyone is near the Twin Cities it would be worth it to check it out.
