Old Willow

Old Willow

Experimental 'Zoom Print' in enlarger, with some digital retouching post silver gelatine printing. More of a 'proof of concept' print.
Location
Old Willows by River Trent near Kneeton, Nottinghamshire

Hybrid Materials & Processing
Zoom print using card mask on wire for holding centre image and racking up enlarger during exposure for peripheral zoom effect. Difficult to rack up smoothly through exposure. More of a 'concept' print ;-)
Digital Post Processing Details
slight digital retouching with Affinity Photo 2 to even out the zoom textures.

This technique could be used for many subjects as long as it isn't overdone. Nice job!
Thanks John, as I said more of a 'concept print' done many years ago. The real difficulty is the 'double masking'. The final image requires two masks - 1) the card with the hole cut out for the primary centre image, with no zoom effect but with vignetting, and the secondary image 2) with the cut out section (the solid middle part of the card cut out from exposure 1) to mask the centre 'straight' image and to allow the 'edge zoom' effect exposure. The problem is the transition zone between the first centre 'straight print' with edge vignetting and the second 'zoom' print using enlarger upwards movement to blur out the edge of the image with the centre part of the image previously exposed masked. (difficult to describe). Upwards enlarger movement has to be very carefully controlled and I found this very difficult to do while also holding and moving the second mask - hence the slight digital retouching. As I said the image shown is more of a 'proof of concept' than a 'fine' zoom print. Perhaps others could take this technique up? My darkroom is no longer operative, which is why I wanted to share the image.
