Bromoil print.
I loved the rustic, non-air conditioned oceanfront cottages that once stood like beacons along the outer banks of North Carolina. Built by shipwrights, they weathered a century of nor'easters and hurricanes, many now bulldozed by man in his quest for progress. Early 1970's negative. Kentmere Artprint VC paper. Brush inked with black/brown/green lithographic inks mixture.
When I visited the Outer Banks last June, this is what I had hoped I would find. I was very disappointed. None of this wonderful character was there, and now it's just completely exploited ocean front with monster houses. I hear the president of Kodak has a house in Corolla. The biggest one there...
On to your print. It's truly wonderful. Your treatment is fantastic as usual. I miss your work when you're not here...
Thanks, Thomas. I just wish I had shot more images back then, when the outer banks had "character." The old juniper houses were called "the unpainted aristocracy," and, to me, were what summer at the beach was all about. Now we have stucco mansions with a decorator touch, complete with swimming pools. Give me the days of a rocking chair on the porch and a bit of sand on the uncarpeted floor. And ... a retriever puppy snoozing on the sofa! Gone forever!
Wonderful subject and wonderful treatment! I really like the way this one turned out. Sadly the wonderful character of the past seems to fade faster every year. Thanks for saving a little piece and a sharing it with all of us.
