This is an amazing photo! The simple play between the rock in the for ground and the trees in the back creates an interesting dynamic. The simplicity of the photograph allows the viewer to 'wander' through the frame.
The flutes and volutes on that foreground form makes a reference to western culture, and mans place and effect on nature. The cleared land with the obvious marks of man (the carved stone) makes me think of the modern idea of the landscape. In the late 70s there was a big movement to show how relationship between man and his surroundings. That movement is still live and well.
A photographer named Richard Misrach has a series of photographs called 'bravo 20.' they are all photographs of missile/bomb test sites in nevada. He also did a series called "Desert Cantos" which, I believe, is about polluting limited resources. These amazing color photograph which are huge really convey a sense of destruction, yet they are amazingly delicate an beautiful. Your photo reminds me of those.
