18th century Rose Street was a favourite destination for Scottish Rennaissance poets and writers. The artist here, in his bare feet, was wearing a donkey jacket in near 30C heat a few days ago. Milne's bar in Rose Street has historical literary connections.

Was in the Cask and Barrel once or twice and told that Ian Rankin drank there but I never saw him.

I was in the Cask and Barrel last year. I always knew it as the Claremont Bar. I'm often in Broughton Street but I've never seen Rankin there.
 
Probably a myth then. I'd have preferred to know where Iain Banks drank. Sadly too late...
 
I went to a talk Ian Banks gave, in a local Dunfermline bookshop, maybe 10 of us there, promoting a book, maybe two years before he died. I felt privileged to be in the presence of greatness. What a loss for Scotland. He lived in North Queensferry.
 
The Crow Road. Brilliant. My son refused to read The Quarry, because that would mean it was over...
