Went down to last weekends day of action. You know people are serious when they come out to protest in November. Gray day, long lens, Delta 3200 35mm film = very grainy. I attempted a lith print on MGWT, which I find difficult to lith on. I'd like to try again. Any advise for lithing on this paper?
I have been using arista powder at anywhere between 1:1:4 - 1:1:10 for about 6 months and find that a stronger dilution speeds the development time a bit (6-8 minutes on MGWT) I have read that this paper really shines on 2nd pass which I have not tried as of yet. This is a nice print. Nice tones that suit the subject matter well.
Thanks David. I've been mixing stronger lately, because of your advice elsewhere, though not at 1:1:4. Any old brown in your mix? 1/3 of my "water" is usually OB. I've quite liked MGWT for second pass lith, but have had blotchy results with Arista. Rollei and Moersch have given me better results - though they've been blotchy sometimes. http://www.apug.org/gallery1/showimage.php?i=58117&catid=member&imageuser=17089
I have used a very strong Arista Lith solution, 1+1+8. I make 3,000ml like this and add 800ml old brown to season it. Works a treat, I think but it's still pretty grainy. Looks like you got the true grain of the film, though, and I wouldn't consider this print particularly grainy compared to anything I have gotten with Tri-X 35mm, let alone Delta 3200.
The other way to go is to use a very dilute single shot developer, season with an old sheet of 8x10 first with the lights on, and then make your print.
I also like the idea of second pass lith. Print the picture about 1/2 stop darker than you usually would, then use very dilute, like 1+1+23 or so, and hot 85*F lith developer. You can even try more dilute than that.
Good advice Thomas! I used to use about 100ml of old brown but I don't anymore. By the time I get the print the way I want it I am on my 4th sheet if paper anyway!
Hope to get back into the darkroom soon, to try your suggestions, Thomas, and David. Thanks Bob, Suzanne, and lensmagic. This was one of those shots that I KNEW would be the best on the roll.
