Nether Levens Hall

Part of a series that I am currently working on looking at vernacular buildings that have quirky designs or detailing. This is now a farm near to Kendal in Cumbria but was originally built as a fortified tower house in the C14th, and has later additions from the C15th, 16th and C17ths. The projecting chimneys are a good clue to its mediaeval origins and the round stacks are a local Westmorland feature. Pity about the render on the walls which is an early C20th attempt at keeping the prevailing westerly rains out!

I am really jealous of you, having such interesting buildings to photograph. Do you live nearby? Great photos and series.

Hi 'Optique'. I don't live too close to this building but I work in the area and have some interest in such buildings as a building conservation professional working in local government in the UK. I needed to ask permission to enter the site as this is the private side of the house but the farmer was quite happy to oblige as long as a I gave him a print, which I have quite recently. Thanks for the comments
Graham
