Nepal Village

I'd like suggestions on how I could have done better on this picture. I learned a lot on that trip (about 12 years back) about the lattitude of film. Shooting rather dark villages in the shadow of snowy mountains was more than the slide film could handle. I think a graded neutral density filter would definitely have helped, but I didn't know about them then. Even if I had, I was keeping my pack to a minimum in weight (and I was even cheaper then!)

I was struck by the power lines in the area. Few villages had electricity. I don't recal which village this is, but it was one the Annapurna trek before Thurung La.

A graded ND does help in these situations but I like the effect of the light sort of "pouring" into the valley and illuminating it. I would have tilted the camera a bit to get the entire power line in the shot, since that is what led to the image and the sweeping lines would have added to the composition. - jim

If you make, or have made for you, a contrast reducing mask you can considerably change the contrast in this photo..you could also, if you wished warm it up a bit and then have a dupe transparecy made or a print made. I am uncertainof my facts but I believe but 12 years ago graduated ND filters were not as common as they are today.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I am too busy to make new photos right now, so I am trying to learn from my older images. I really wish I had captured all of the power lines in this case. I think that was in my head, but I just failed to execute.

Thanks!

This is a very difficult and intense scene and I think you've done a very good job with it. I am particularly drawn to the intersecting lines formed by the mountains in the background. There is just so much going on...The brightness range is the first and most obvious hurdle. There must be at least five stops here. The geometry, lines and curves are also very interesting and a little overwhelming. My first thought was, "I'd like to see a little more detail in the lower left triangle - the repeating, horizontal curved pattern of the village is barely discernable on my monitor at home. Much easier to see here at...mmm, that place I go during the day. OTOH, bringing out more detail in the village might make the image too busy, it might loose that serene feeling. There might be another way to look at this scene, how about cropping out the lower quarter of the image? So that you have just a few row of the village at bottom of the frame and the river emanates from the bottom edge of the frame. I think it makes a stronger statement this way - a different statement though. As is, it, as you say in your description, the emphasis is upon the power lines...that they are special. Cropping would diminsh their importance, but highlight the more basic elements - the geometry, shapes and colors of nature...
