John this is a nice composition with good tonality and exquisitely managed in the darkroom... My problem with this image is that I have seen it a thousand times. There were many opportunities within this picture that would have enabled you to provide a different slant on this kind of scene and truly make it unique. You could have played with the shapes created by the light and dark areas along the pews to create abstractions that would have been interesting and exciting. The window panes and the shapes above them are yet another opportunity... I say go back to this church and look for the pictures within the picture that most photograpers don't bother to find.
Did you intend some subtle editorial message by photographing the exit, John? ;-)
Although this image may not be the most dynamic or creative shot possible in the church, I like "documentary" shots like this, and think they have real value. The fact that the tonal range and clarity are excellent are just icing on the cake (or, wafer, as the case may be). Sorta like Half Dome - just because it has "been done" doesn't mean we should stop photographing it.
John, I love the use of straight lines and the symmetry of this one. I always find capturing the interiors of old churches challenging as the light is usually very uneven with dark shadows to fill. For me you've nailed this one.
I agree that the image is a good one. I also agree that the light/shadows on the floor between the pews is superb and could harbour a stunning image. You clearly identified this, but perhaps did not make as much of it as you could have. I think with such great light you could lose the church context and go for something abstract but more subtle and intriguing. The best bit for you is that this church is local and that light is going to happen again.....lucky you!!!
noone mentioned the little light coming in where the two door handles meet.Almost as if someone or something is making their way in-put your finger over the spot and the images changes...
