N Rosebush

It was foggy and flat light, so I thought what better a time to try some N+ development to try to coax some contrasts out of some folliage. Adams' The Print has a fern on the cover I had in mind.

Spot metered the shadows and put them in zone III. The younger leaves were reading zone V. Dev't is 23 minutes in Rodinal for FP4 exposed at 80. In my book, that would be about N+1.5 - but this is my first ever try.

It prints nicely, although it's easy to get it too dark, and the negative on the whole seems thin except on the brighter leaves. Any glaring omissions or suggestions?

If you have more shadow detail that you want visible try both a 2 and a 1-1/2 filters.

I use a diffusion enlarger head, so II 1/2 is about soft or neutral contrast IMO. I wanted to see how much I could raise the mid/high tones through extended dev't, without really focusing on shadow detail. I figured by rating the film at a 2/3 under its given speed, together with placing shadow detail in zone III (or even lower) would comply with Les McClean's suggestion to slightly under expose for N+ dev't. Or is it best to expose the same way all the time, and then deal with shadow detail at the printing stage? Getting confused.

f/8 and be there-yes you certainly were. And as one who attempts these photos myself it is well done. I Zone and then bracket. I can never remember whether to subtract or add to asa. Point is you brought it home. It's a point in time!
Best, Peter

Best deal with the shadow detail at exposure. Looks like FP4 got alot of toe in the developement. The combination was good for the mids but not for the shadow detail, not that it compromised the image at all. Great.

Thanks all. Will definitely have another go at this - particularly after seeing the Adams' Fern is going for $185,000

Ryan: I agree. I need to get an extension ring as I'm constantly limited to minimum focus distance for head shots and this kind of stuff. I hate cropping under the enlarger.
