This is one of the first photographs I ever made with intent. I knew I wanted something of my grandfather that I could keep with me for the rest of my life. It all came together that day. Did he come down that road, or am I traveling up it? Where does it go? I miss him.

The whole picture has impact He looks a very thoughtful gent and the kind whom you could always approach for help. He is in a situation that would be almost impossible in the U.K. now, namely, standing on an empty highway that by the looks of it is a main highway. Most of even our rural country roads are never this empty

For me this suggests a small borderless print on a dark/black background... effect of peering back into that old world..

Inspires me to play with shots of my own grandfather and grandmother.

I think the vignette is important.
