I like this & opened it before the prior image. I get befuddled about what it is that I like about them & have never posed any of my own - 'cause I have no feel for it. I like the shot - just useless as to why.
So, HiHo, i have tried to put into words to myself why i like this photo so much as well, hoping to learn to see these subjects needing to be photographed. But there is something about the consistent white backdrop with dark subject; showing through the windows between the stair treads (and even the landing deck), and just the stark contrasted lines and borders that go in their own necessary directions. Those window frames, the conduit changing direction, and the railing and stair risers cutting across it all. It just all came together but is hard to recognize why. But the fire escape did know why, and shouted to the attentive sensibility of Sly to be taken. It is just great. Maybe this is how NYC spoke to Brett Weston. Sly made it look so natural and obvious.
I think you're on to something, Michael about intricate & sometimes chaotic patterns grabbing the eye. The inside stairwell is a completely different animal, usually leading the eye to a more distant point. I've shot a small number & couldn't say why, but this pattern intricatcy seems like its at least in the ballpark.
BTW, anyone who has not taken a stroll through Sly's gallery is missing out.
Thank you both. While I was shooting, I was more excited about the other image, but once printed, this was my favourite. My workplace is now in this part of town. Used to have a yard/garden to sit in for a break, but now office opens onto street. I've taken to wandering the neighbourhood for 15-30 minutes every day.
'Sure glad you took your cam on your walks. 'Wish I had when I worked downtown & walked during lunch. 'Hope we see more from your walks. These are wonderful.
