If the cars were going in the "right direction", this could have been taken in California, plasticized palms and all.

For some reason though I find this more interesting - and painterly, as you say. The CA version would fall short!
 
yes... we have them here in florida as well, i commenting on the effect you've captured... the graphic palms with the low hills at the horizon - it really makes the image graphic and notable!!!!
