Well, here goes my first attempt at getting a beating in the critique gallery.
This photo was taken in Mont-Laurier, a northern town in the Laurentians, which was the center of the region I'm from. I was actually born in a small village 20km away, but Mont-Laurier is where I spent my high school, where my mom and dad worked, and the only place with a library that actually has books. I have left the region in 1996, and have lived in Montreal since.
I took this photo while strolling around town, so the first thing that caught my eye was the light and shadow pattern. Then I noticed the rather dissimilar views each door offered. These openings are from the ruins of the cathedral, which was rebuilt after a fire, leaving only the original façade standing.
To me it brings together the two sides of living in a country town: urbanization in the middle of the woods. The cathedral is there to remind us also that Catholicism was the driving force in the construction of the region. Perhaps it was also a driving wedge that separated man from nature as well.
I'm submitting that photo because I think it is the first photo I made that intends to represent a place and ideas about it. I make a lot of pictures simply out of what looks good to my eye, but I thought this picture also had a theme.
