A fairly recent carbon print...first printing of a 2014 negative.
It is from a 4x10 negative. I use a modified darkslide to expose two 4x10 images on a sheet of 8x10.
Really nice Vaughn. I think I mentioned before, this is one of my favorite places. 4x10 would be a nice size print for this, big enough to see but small enough to make the viewer look!
Ah! You caught that, awty! I love to get the viewers' feet wet, visually speaking. The camera was set up where I could keep my feet dry, though! Fortunately I have feet that handle cold very well -- I was in and out of the Virgin River in Zion Canyon quite a bit thoughout April. River sandals and no socks work the best for me, tho they do not supply a lot of support when carrying the 8x10, nor gave much protection against the cacti along the river.
I do notice that the image seems unsharp unless viewed at 4"x10" on my computer screen. Difficult to get the true feel of a print via a computer sceen. In this case, the raised relief and the sharpness that a carbon print is capable of disappears on the screen. The qualities of a carbon print are not the point, but they are integral to what and how I photograph and I treat them as part of the image. The smaller scale (8x10, 4x10, 5x7) does invite the viewer in close to where these print qualities can be fully appreciated.
Found the negative -- older than I thought...corrected data above.
The detail and depth in the leaves is amazing - I wish I could see it in person as I'm sure it's even better. Definitely an image I could happily stare at for awhile.
