HiHo, the composition works nicely here. Also, the dynamic range is very good for the amount of highlights and shadow area. Highlights were not blown-out and good detail in shadows as well.

Maybe a tiny bit more (as Ansel would say) 'luminosity' for the shadowed parts, but, in sum, the image is pleasing.

Your exposure seems to confirm what I have always though about Pan F+: It is not as fast as that box speed indicates. I rate Pan F+ at 16.

This exposure, which includes sunlit portions, was at only EV 9 (i,e, f11 (EV 7) plus 1/4 (EV 2). When exposing for ONLY sunlight, which could include some shadow detail, I use an EV of 12, which is indicative of a film speed of only 16.

That said, your shadows could be slightly enhanced and I would assume that the negative, at that generous exposure, actually has good shadow detail, but, due to the slight over development of the negative, perhaps that detail had to be left out of the print in order to provide adequate highlight separation. - David Lyga

Trail, Thank You!

David, Many thanks. You touch on several parts I'm very much getting my noggin around. The expansive shadow - I seem to be wanting the rich blacks & low key values I sometimes see with water shots. Ishutteratthethought's work comes to mind quickly - gorgeous. The how/where/when they work best. I'm still working with it. A little like my low preference for the fuzzy shot - generally don't like them. And then, someone hits it out of the park with one because all the elements harmonize so well with it. FWIW, I meter the PanF at ISO 25 - sounds like we're both happier w/ a bit more exposure on this film.

Peter, thank you. It is somewhat unavoidable that its largely a 'record shot'. The terrain is highly textured and tucked tightly into a canyon that affords few choices for providing a more aesthetic context.

Very charming and a considerably better Pan-F shot than most of mine with that film.

@Andrew O'Neill I think he is gone, back in October 2017. I had sent to him a message and he never responded. I think that he is finished with Photrio. (Hope I am wrong.) - David Lyga

I thought he briefly reappeared over the Summer. There was a thread asking where he was (I can’t find that thread now). We used to exchange PM's (sometimes with Michael Orr) but he hasn't replied in a long time. Hiho's profile says last seen September 2018.
