This interests me. Old master machinists are precious close to magicians in what they can do. Capturing the sense of that magic has always seemed both worthy and difficult. I get rich tones, but the compositions rarely exceed industrial blandness. I hope you keep working these kinds of compositions - gives me inspiration.
Thanks for the fine comments. Right across the room from this guy is a large metal lathe made in 1916 which really has that early industrial beauty to it. My guess is that industrial scenes are hard to photograph because the only lighting is overhead fluorescent bulbs. This leaves the undersides of machines in shadows. If I hadn't used the spotlight it would have come out very much like that.
As a side note I am working on designing and building a 500cc motorcycle engine out of plans written in 1906. There will be plenty of photos coming out of that that will be similar to this. I am making patterns right now.
Thanks,
Brian
'can't wait til next summer at the Steam Power show - 1900 shop setup - all belt-driven. All the walls & backgrounds will be wood. I'll have to bring a strong flashlight to fill in any shadows.
