I think when I print this I might let it go a bit rectangular and crop just below his jacket and above his helmet to get rid of some dead space....thoughts?

I think you got the framing right when you took the shot. Leave it as it is. It's an excellent portrait.

I like it a lot as well. Nice work. If I was printing it, the only cropping would be a tiny bit off the top. The rest should stay, IMHO
