This is a scan of a 4x 5 inch area of an 8 x 10 inch negative. I've always liked this part of the larger image. Here it is printed in palladium. Photo from 2002, print from a few days ago. Image size: 10.5 x 7.5 inches.
Very nice. Theres a bit of a halo effect on the right side helping to define the silhouette, is that done by the lighting or dodge and burning on the neg? Sorry for my questioning, only way I learn, you can send me the bill.
Thank you everyone for these thoughtful comments. @awty So, there was a slight glow around her profile that became more noticeable as I worked the scan in Photoshop. The glow was probably from what is known as the "adjacency effect." As you may know, when still very active developer that has been absorbed in the silver gelatin emulsion in the shadow areas, bleeds into an area that is adjacent, it causes additional development along that border. This has always been thought of as a beneficial effect since it creates better definition. Some B&W developers (DK-50 for one) were better than others in creating this effect. In this case I enhanced that in Photoshop and then added to it, to help her lovely profile and the areas below, such as her finger to be more clearly defined. Too much info?
@artonpaper Thanks a very good explanation and example. I often use pyrocat hd developer which is good for the effect. Need to work on my lighting. Thanks again.
Hi Doug:
While this looks so nice on the inter-web, I'm guessing it looks so beautiful in person. Really beautiful imagery you make.
Thank you for posting !
