There's another image in the gallery of someone with a spinning wheel, which reminded me of this self-portrait I took 10 years ago...also a nice throwback since today is also my birthday. Put the camera on the table, set the timer, and ran to get myself into position and the wheel spinning.
Very cool! I love the motion in the shot and the serenity on your face (that's not easy to achieve in a SP). My mom could probably identify the wheel (she's a spinner), but I can't. She visited her sister in CO and was more excited about touring the Schacht factory than anything else.
@winger I don't know if that's serenity on my face, or a "I hope I don't screw up the shot" face. I did several runs to be sure something would turn out, and in fact, this shot, which was the last one I took, was the keeper - of course I had no way of knowing at the time. I do I wish I could have held my head more still, but the whole process of tripping the shutter, running back to the wheel, getting it spinning, getting my hands with the fleece up high enough, but also trying to keep still, and doing that all in less 10 seconds was hard enough! I'd like to revisit this neg as this was printed not long after I started learning how to print. I know I tried to burn in that window, but it wasn't enough. As for the wheel, I know it wasn't an artifact, but a newer copy of an older version. I couldn't tell you the model though. That said, I loved spinning so much I seriously thought about buying my own wheel and was looking into where I could get some fleece and carders.
Had to look again - which led to a stroll through your gallery. Goodness. Beautiful work. The night shots are killer. Clarity, tones just scream quality.
@mooseontheloose - I can probably hook you up with carders and fleece sources. My parents are in the process of downsizing and I know my mom has all sorts of stuff if she hasn't passed it all to other spinners she knows.
The image doesn't look like you ran in at the last second - well done. If you reprint it, show us the new one, please.
@winger - Thanks! I would love some carders but there really isn't any point since I don't have a spinning wheel and am unlikely to have one while I am living here in Japan - not just because of sourcing issues, but because my small Japanese apartment does not have the space for it. As for the print, I have a number of images from the village that I would like to print properly (not just RC work prints, which is what I have at the moment), but that won't happen anytime soon due to work. However, if and when I do I'll definitely put them up here!
I really like this photo. I think you look like you are concentrating on your work, not like you just ran over to the wheel.
My Wife has a Great Wheel (no flyer) that came with the family from Pennsylvania by covered wagon about 1870. She spins with that, but she doesn't wear period clothing.
