Mat 25 Ladyboy Sex Worker, Thailand 2008

Mat 25 Ladyboy Sex Worker, Thailand 2008

I am scanning some of the first color shots done of the ladyboys in 2008. I am using a negative scanner and being forced to use photoshop to do my burning and dodging. I used to do that on the prints in the darkroom then scan the prints but now with the neg scanner it has to be done in photoshop. I am trying to create the same look as the final print will have. I usually print on Kodak Metalic paper which creates a silvery high contrast image.

So, I'm simply curious as to your craft, you are using a harsh light to show the masc. details and I'm left wanting to know the projects intent. Is it just a personal project? Also, I never thought about using the Kodak Metalic paper for portraits of any kind. How are you finding it? In any event this sounds like a very good project.

I think the harsh light is a result of a couple of things.
-The influence of Diane Arbus
-The harshness in my mind is a visual way to communicate the harsh life these people live. The idea of making things beautiful with beautiful lighting seems wrong to me.

I always like the look of Cibachromes and Metallic Paper with VC film creates high contrast, vibrant color and a metalish tinnish feel to the images than I like.

I have a whole bag of 220 Portra VC to develop from last year so will be posting some of them here. Most of the film was outdated stuff or close to outdated stuff I bought on ebay!!

I like the tones... you confess a Diane Arbus influence but I feel a Nan Goldin rather one... just for the sake of precision, if you submit an scan neg, even if you photoshop it in order of get the final print look, you must post as Paper & Developer nothing or neg scan.

yes Nan Goldin is one of my favorite photogs Jose, got most of her books and love the stuff she does, including the stuff she did of Thai ladyboys....ok thanks will list them as neg scan from now on.
