It's an intriguing "I wonder" shot. I wonder if these 3 are old mates who meet regularly and if so why there? I wonder of there is a pub nearby and they are there due to the no smoking rule although only one appears to be smoking
Most importantly I wonder what the particular topic of conversation was and what the guy on the left is looking at on his lower arm
If it had been several years ago with afternoon pub closing it reminds me of the small group meets that you'd see frequently at about 2:45 pm to maybe 3:15pm not far from pubs where men gathered to put the world to rights before departing to wherever they came
I think Marvel has a cigarette in his left hand. The other two are I think smoking. That would explain why they are out in the street. They probably came out of the door on the left of the photograph. They were already out on the street when I turned up with my camera. I haven't a clue what Marvel is up to. The licensing laws in Scotland changed in the mid 70's? I well remember the afternoon exodus from pubs after closing time at 2.30pm. Men would hang about waiting, or go home for a sleep or something to eat waiting for pubs to open again at 5pm. Back in the 50's, when the church still had influence, you had to "sign in" at hotels to get a drink on a Sunday. I don't think you can buy alcohol in shops and supermarkets in Scotland on a Sunday until 1230pm. John Knox and his Reformation lives on into the 21st century.
