Actually I think it's the contrast that makes him seem real.

My first thought before reading any text was "This guy almost looks like a shop dummy". Great contrast, I like that a lot.

You can't see the eyes. Also, the light from above makes his nose cast a shadow that vaguely resembles the moustache of a German dictator. No wonder the photo has a menacing feel to it.

Yes, he looks unfriendly. /has some curves in face like Arnold Schwarzenegger in action movie .../

The grain gives it a bit more texture like human skin. Nice shot through a window too.
