I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. I have a completely open mind about male figure studies, and I like self portraits, but I'm not sure what to make of this. Can we get a statement from the artist about his intent?
Neal
Thanks for all your comments! Very nice to read such different thoughts and opinions.
Artist statement:
I'm trying to show one side of me, with a little provocation and a bit of humour. I'm also trying to make a little statement regarding masculinity, gender and nude photography.
Answers:
Yes, self portrait.
Yes, Hasselblad, and glad to see you. ;-)
I'm not of any school. Although I have seen both Newton's and Man Ray's work. But did they ever show themselves naked? Most male photographers don't, in my experience.
Self portraits have been done a thousand times, yes. But landscapes, textures, industrial landscapes, still lives etc are even more common IMO, especially here on APUG. Should we stop shooting those types of images, just because they're ordinary?
The subject is "fingering" his Hasselblad 503CX, with a 80 mm F/2.8 Planar CFE attached to it. Perhaps it had been more appropriate with a 150 mm F/4 Sonnar or even a 180 mm? ;-)
