Lost and Found: Mountains

This is an interesting one from the binder i bought. I have no idea where this is. Could be anywhere as the photographer ranged all across the southwest it seems. I do like the rows of boulders. Though something is not quite right with the composition. I dont know what.
I reconize the spot. Definitely Alabama Hills, just outside Lone Pine, CA. Too static with that lump of rock in the center, perhaps.

I like the juxtaposition of the vertical boulders in front of the mountains. Beautiful tones, textures and shapes. Very nice depth.

@Old-N-Feeble I like that also. In the thumbnail the middle line of boulders seem to predominate as I feel they should. However in the full size pic the three lines of boulders seem to be of more equal weight which lead to the "too static" feeling.

A good picture nevertheless and one in which B&W matches colour which is often not the case for landscape

Hmm... now that you mention it, cropping to the center row of boulders might indeed make a stronger visual statement. I love the image as it is but I held a cropping device (two pieces of print paper) to the screen to crop the sides and I do believe I like it even better in a way. However, that cropping tends to also make the image feel a bit constrained. If it was my photo I'd have a very difficult time deciding whether to crop or not.

I am no expert in what is wrong or right, but the mountains in the background seem to not belong, but rather appear as a backdrop. I imagine a wider angle lens, set back a bit more, would bring more of this together, and/or maybe getting more "on top" of the foreground. But then, doing this loses the great drama of the big rocks, which is what the photograph is about and makes it so cool. Wish i new what the answer was. Looking at it again, i really thing that big hill in right mid-ground throws everything off. The mountains in the background would probably look right but for something big in the mid-ground.

I've notice the difference in appearance Michael speaks of in numberous landscapes. Its like an atmospheric curtain is drawn between forground & back.
